TL;DR: Almeria’s tourism continues to grow steadily in the third quarter, with more visitors, higher hotel occupancy , and increased museum attendance, driven mainly by domestic tourists and strengthened by a rise in cruise ship arrivals during August.

Almeria Sees Rise in Tourism and Museum Visits

Visitor Numbers on the Rise

Almeria has seen a positive trend in tourism from July through September, as reported by the city council. The Municipal Tourism Office received 5,800 visitors over the three months and handled 3,300 inquiries, with domestic tourists making up the majority. Close to 3,000 visitors came from within Spain, while just under 1,500 were international travelers. July brought a significant 34% increase in tourist visits compared to July 2025, with most visitors coming from Madrid, Catalonia, and Castilla y Leon. Madrid alone accounted for 21% of the national visitors, followed by Barcelona and Sevilla.

International Visitors and Cruise Arrivals

International tourism contributed around 20% of all visits during this period, with France, the United Kingdom, and Italy leading the list of countries of origin. France represented 27% of foreign visitors, while the UK and Italy brought 17% and 9%, respectively. Germany and Poland also contributed to the increase, with the latter showing notable growth compared to the previous year. August was especially marked by the return of cruise ships to Almeria’s port. Three ships arrived carrying nearly 3,000 passengers, a considerable increase from just one cruise with 340 passengers the previous August. However, July saw no cruise arrivals, unlike the three ships that docked the year before.

Hotel Occupancy Peaks

Average hotel occupancy rates followed this upward path, reaching 85% in July, a five-point increase over the previous year despite no cruise traffic that month. August saw the highest occupancy figures, surpassing 89%, with city center hotels approaching full capacity at over 98%, and establishments in the El Toyo area maintaining above 80%. September continued to perform positively, maintaining steady visitor engagement and demand for local accommodations.

Cultural and Leisure Interests Drive Tourism

A notable rise in visitors’ interest in cultural experiences was observed. The increased attention to Almeria’s museums, night tours of the Alcazaba fortress, musical events, and the lively festival program reflected in the spike in tourist office consultations. Many visitors also sought information about the beaches within the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, outdoor activities, family-friendly events, and local cuisine. Within this cultural and leisure mix, domestic tourists dominated visitor numbers, making up 81% in August and similar proportions throughout the quarter, with Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia ranking as key feeder markets.

Looking Ahead

The data collected for these three months confirms a robust tourism recovery and growth pattern in Almeria. With strong national support and increasing international interest, especially from European neighbours, the city’s tourism infrastructure, including hotels and museums, is busier than in previous years. The return of cruise ship traffic is also providing an added boost to local businesses and cultural venues. The positive momentum sets a promising stage for the rest of the year, suggesting that visitors will continue to discover the rich cultural and natural offerings of Almeria.
