Almería Launches First Public Electric Car Chargers in the City

Almería introduces its first public electric car chargers with fast 120 kW stations across key city spots, offering quick and convenient EV charging.

TL;DR: Almería is rolling out its first public electric vehicle (EV) charging points in key locations around the city, with fast chargers managed by Galp offering a convenient option for residents and visitors to power up while out and about.

New Electric Vehicle Chargers

Green Markings Highlight Charging Spots

Over the past few weeks, drivers in Almería have likely noticed fresh green paint marking parking bays in various parts of the city—an eye-catching signal that things are changing. Alongside these bright green spaces, new electric sockets have been installed, marking the introduction of Almería’s first municipal network of electric vehicle charging points. These chargers aren’t fully operational yet, but their presence signals a clear commitment to supporting cleaner mobility.

Locations Spread Across the City

One of the earliest chargers is set up on Calle Estadio, right next to the Estadio de la Juventud. But the initiative spans much further. Preparations are underway in several other spots: parking areas at Parque de las Almadrabillas, sections along Rambla Federico García Lorca near Burger King and the pub La Calle, Calle Altamira, and more. The City Council awarded the contract in late 2024 to Galp Energía España, which will install and maintain a total of 25 public charging stations for at least eight years.

Fast Charging and User Details

These new stations pack a substantial punch, offering up to 120 kW of power. That means charging can add roughly 100 kilometers of range in just 6 to 8 minutes—a real time-saver for drivers needing a quick top-up. Users can pay directly with cards at the chargers. It’s worth noting that if two cars charge at once, the available power divides between them, and the actual charge speed can vary depending on the vehicle’s capacity.

Future Growth and Accessibility

According to the official plan, the charging points will be located in well-trafficked and strategically chosen neighborhoods, including Plaza San Pedro, Avenida Pablo Iglesias, Calle Granada, Avenida de la Estación, Calle Italia, Calle Santiago, El Palmeral, Calle Instinción, and Retamar. On top of these, Galp proposed an additional 15 locations approved by the local government, showing a clear intention to make charging widely accessible throughout the city.

With this growing infrastructure, Almería is quietly getting ready for more electric vehicles on its streets, balancing local convenience with a step towards sustainable urban transport—something both residents and visitors can appreciate.
