Healthcare in Almería – Hospitals, Pharmacies and Emergencies
Healthcare in Almería
Knowing what to do in case of illness or injury can give peace of mind during your trip. Here’s how healthcare works in Almería, including hospitals, pharmacies, insurance and emergency contacts.
Emergency Numbers
For any serious emergency, dial 112. This is a free, multilingual number available 24/7 across Spain. It connects you to ambulance, police and fire services. For medical-only assistance, you can also call 061.
Hospitals and Clinics
Almería has both public and private hospitals. Major facilities include:
- Hospital Universitario Torrecárdenas (public)
- Hospital Mediterráneo (private)
- Hospital de Poniente (El Ejido, public)
EU citizens can use their **EHIC (European Health Insurance Card)** for treatment in public hospitals. Non-EU visitors should have **travel insurance** with health coverage.
Pharmacies (Farmacias)
Pharmacies are marked with a green cross and are widely available, even in small towns. Opening hours are typically 9:30–13:30 and 17:00–20:00 on weekdays, with some offering 24-hour service on a rotating basis (“farmacia de guardia”).
Private Medical Care
If you prefer private care, you’ll pay directly and then seek reimbursement from your insurer. Private clinics usually offer faster service and may have English-speaking staff.
COVID-19 and Vaccinations
No specific vaccinations are required to enter Spain. Pharmacies stock self-tests and masks. For the latest COVID-19 info, visit the Ministry of Health website.
