Port Authority of Almeria Invests €30 Million in EU Funded Upgrades

The Port Authority of Almeria is investing 30 million euros in EU funds to modernize and green port infrastructure, enhancing sustainability and economic.

TL;DR: Since 2023, the Port Authority of Almeria has been investing 30 million euros of European Union funds in modernising and greening port infrastructure, with key projects underway to boost sustainability, efficiency, and economic growth.

Almeria Port Infrastructure Modernisation

Significant European Investment Mobilised

The Port Authority of Almeria (APA) has been actively deploying 30 million euros in European funds obtained since 2023 to upgrade the ports of Almeria and Carboneras. These investments are part of thirteen projects aiming to improve port services, facilities, and infrastructure with a focus on sustainability. The total value of these initiatives reaches 70 million euros, reflecting a strong financial commitment to supporting the economic development of the province through its maritime gateways.

Progress and Project Pipeline

Out of the thirteen projects supported through various EU subsidy schemes, six have been fully completed. The remaining seven projects are progressing through the stages of detailed design and tendering, with expectations to finish by 2029. According to APA president Rosario Soto, the success so far stems from the coordinated efforts and efficiency of the port’s technical team in aligning each project with stringent sustainability criteria required by the funding programs.

Focus on Sustainable Energy and Emission Reduction

Among the flagship investments funded by the EU is the upcoming tender in November for a transport line and an electrical substation with a budget of approximately 15.5 million euros. This initiative will introduce an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at the Port of Almeria, capable of delivering up to 20 MW, with the utility Endesa already confirming an 8 MW supply capacity. The OPS will enable up to five regular-service ships to connect simultaneously, significantly cutting noise and CO2 emissions during docked periods.

In addition to this, multiple facilities have been energy-optimized. Photovoltaic solar plants are already operational, including installations on the rooftop of the Border Control Post and Ribera II warehouses, generating up to 660 kW for self-consumption. Further solar projects are underway at the Port of Carboneras and for the Ribera I quay parking area in Almeria. These solar arrays cover about one hectare of roofs and will also provide shaded pre-boarding spaces. APA aims to achieve zero carbon footprint concerning its direct electricity use at the Port of Almeria by 2027, relying entirely on renewable energy.

Infrastructure Expansion and Modernisation

Another major project nearing contract award is the expansion of the Pechina Quay with an investment of 26 million euros and a projected two-year construction timeline. This expansion, partially funded by 6 million euros from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), is considered strategically important for integrating Almeria into a European-wide efficient and sustainable transport network. The upgrade is expected to attract further investment and increase cargo traffic capacity.

Together with structural enhancements, the APA is also undertaking major energy efficiency refurbishments in its buildings. These include comprehensive renovation of the dry dock area and ongoing projects to upgrade the thermal insulation of the maritime station and adjacent facilities with an investment exceeding 4 million euros. The focus remains on optimising energy use while improving operational spaces.

Enhancing Port Operations and Services

Beyond infrastructure, the EU funding supports operational improvements like advanced border control systems compliant with the Entry/Exit System (EES) to better manage passenger flows from non-EU countries. The APA is also modernizing facilities such as the fish auction centre and setting up waste management points within the Almeria Fishing Port. Energy-efficient lighting installations are also part of the broader effort to reduce resource consumption across port premises.

These developments demonstrate the Port Authority of Almeria’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies and sustainability practices while strengthening its economic footprint, ensuring the province’s ports remain competitive and future-ready.
