Mojacar Wastewater Plant Delay Announced
Delay Announced by Water Authority
The large-scale wastewater treatment plant destined to serve Mojacar and its surrounding municipalities will now begin operations in May 2027, a 15-month delay from the original schedule. The facility had been planned to be up and running by February 2026, but the regional delegate for Agriculture and Water, Aranzazu Martin, confirmed the postponement, attributing it to a technical modification proposed by the construction company responsible for the work.
Service Area and Infrastructure Details
Once operational, the plant will provide wastewater treatment for approximately 53,800 residents across Mojacar, Garrucha, Turre, Los Gallardos, and Bedar. Beyond the treatment facility itself, the project includes eight pumping stations and fourteen major collectors, which altogether cover 28.5 kilometres of pipeline infrastructure designed to efficiently manage sewage flows across the region.
Project Cost and Historical Context
The total investment in this comprehensive hydraulic infrastructure project amounts to 19 million euros. Delegates emphasize that this facility had faced significant delays even before the current administration assumed office, indicating that the project had been postponed for several years prior to its recent developments. The latest technical adjustments and additional construction work have contributed to the current timeline extension.
Next Steps for Completion
With the updated completion date set for May 2027, efforts are now focused on resolving technical challenges and finalising the construction and commissioning phases. The region’s water management authorities and the contractor are coordinating closely to ensure the plant’s delivery meets the new schedule, aiming to improve wastewater treatment capacity and environmental outcomes for these coastal communities.
