TL;DR: Huercal de Almeria begins a 487,000-euro project to widen and improve the Torrecardenas road, enhancing traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and connections to key areas including schools and the San Rafael industrial estate.
Torrecardenas Road Expansion Underway
Widening Key Road to Almeria
Work has started on doubling the lanes of the Torrecardenas road in Huercal de Almeria. This important stretch runs between the Endesa roundabout on the A-1000 and a smaller roundabout near Rosita Street, close to the San Rafael industrial estate. The project, with an investment of just under 487,250 euros, aims to increase the road’s capacity by creating two lanes in each direction for much of its route. This upgrade is expected to ease heavy traffic flows, especially at peak times.
Improved Safety for Drivers and Pedestrians
Alongside lane widening, authorities are enhancing the road surface with new paving and upgrading the drainage system to prevent water build-up during heavy rains. Crucially, pedestrian protection is a major focus, particularly near La Jarilla school. The plan includes two new raised pedestrian crossings controlled by traffic lights, as well as improvements to sidewalks and pedestrian zones. These measures are designed to make the area safer for schoolchildren and residents in the busy neighborhood divided by the road.
Better Access for Local Communities and Industry
The road acts as a vital link connecting the village with Almeria city and forms a boundary between Villa Ines and the La Fuensanta district. Enhancing this corridor will improve daily travel for people accessing schools like La Jarilla, commercial areas, and the San Rafael industrial estate. The project is part of a wider effort to modernize the main access points and arterial roads in Huercal de Almeria, ensuring they meet the needs of a growing population and economy.
Ongoing Transport Improvements in Huercal
This expansion is one of several recent investments to bolster the municipality’s infrastructure. Previous work has included widening the bridge over the Andarax River, enlarging parts of the N-340a and A-1000 highways, and reorganizing traffic flow in Villa Ines along Rio Guadalquivir Street. Together, these initiatives aim to create a safer, more efficient road network that supports both residents and businesses in the area.
Mayor Ismael Torres emphasized the significance of the project noting that Torrecardenas road is essential for local and regional connectivity. He highlighted the importance of enhancing pedestrian safety in sensitive areas and expressed a commitment to ongoing improvements that respond to Huercal’s growth and development.
