TL;DR: Heavy rains caused road closures and localized flooding across eastern Almeria, prompting emergency measures, with the worst-affected areas in the Levante and Almanzora valleys.
Flooding and Road Disruptions in Eastern Almeria
Significant Rainfall Hits Levante and Almanzora
Friday saw persistent and intense rainfall affecting several parts of Almeria province, especially the Levante, Almanzora Valley, and Los Velez regions. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had declared an orange alert due to the forecast for heavy storms and intense downpours. The areas experienced varied rainfall levels, with the heaviest precipitation reported around Vera Playa, where more than 45 liters per square meter fell. Nearby locations such as Oria and Fines also recorded significant amounts, close to 40 and 30 liters respectively, highlighting the uneven but heavy nature of the rainfall.
Road Closures in Cuevas del Almanzora
The rainy conditions led to disruptions on local roads, notably in Cuevas del Almanzora. Early in the morning, the AL-8105 road connecting the Burjulu and Muleria hamlets was temporarily closed due to water covering the road surface but has since reopened. Meanwhile, AL-8106, the road linking Las Herrerias to Villaricos, remains closed as a precaution. These closures reflect the immediate impact of the rains on traffic safety and accessibility within the region.
Flooding in Vera Playa’s Naturist Area
Vera experienced intense rains as well, with the naturist zone of Vera Playa again suffering from flooding – a recurring issue when heavy rain occurs in this location. The saturation of the ground and drainage limitations in this coastal area often cause water to accumulate, underscoring ongoing challenges for flood management in the municipality. These episodes disrupt daily life and can require local emergency responses to assist residents and motorists.
Emergency Plans Activated
In response to the evolving weather situation, the Andalusian Government activated the Special Emergency Plan for Flood Risks (PERI) at operational level 1, indicating a phase of emergency preparedness. This activation ensures coordinated efforts by emergency services and local authorities to deal with potential incidents arising from the heavy rain and flooding, aiming to protect residents and maintain public safety.
Ongoing Weather Concerns
Despite the initial severity, Aemet forecasts for Saturday indicate that rainfall will continue, with a yellow alert still in effect for the Almanzora Valley and Los Velez. While no further warnings have been issued for the days following Saturday, localized showers remain possible, maintaining the need for vigilance in these vulnerable areas. Residents and visitors alike are advised to stay informed about weather updates as the situation develops.
