TL;DR: The provincial government has fully refurbished the 3.79-kilometer road linking Matagorda and Almerimar, improving safety, easing local traffic, and preparing for future cycling infrastructure with a €550,000 investment.
Matagorda to Almerimar Road Renovation Finished
Road Rebuilt for Safety and Comfort
The Diputacion Provincial de Almeria has completed a comprehensive renovation of the municipal road connecting Matagorda with the popular coastal area of Almerimar and the A-389 highway. Stretching just under 4 kilometers, the route had suffered significant deterioration due to aging infrastructure and heavy local traffic. The upgrade included replacing the old surface with a durable new asphalt layer and expanding the carriageway by two meters where space allowed, notably on the southern side. This work not only enhances driving conditions but also boosts road safety with the installation of new guardrails designed to protect motorcyclists, as well as updated horizontal and vertical signage.
Drainage Solutions Tackle Flooding Issues
One of the key challenges addressed in this project was the frequent flooding experienced during heavy rains. To counter this, engineers installed an underground system of pipes alongside concrete-lined V-shaped ditches and drainage wells. Additional transversal drainage works help channel water efficiently away from the road surface. These improvements ensure that the road remains accessible and safer throughout the wetter months, addressing a long-standing concern for residents and commuters in the area.
Investment Reflects Commitment to Local Connectivity
The full cost of the work, amounting to €550,000, was covered by the Diputacion as part of its extensive Plan de Caminos. This plan, described by president José Antonio García Alcaina as the most ambitious investment in the institution’s history, allocates €14 million to improving roads across the province. The president emphasized the project’s importance for linking communities and supporting local industries, farming, and tourism in the Poniente region. The road serves as a vital corridor for agricultural sectors in El Ejido and as a key connection to one of Almeria’s busiest tourist hotspots.
Preparation for Sustainable Mobility
Beyond immediate improvements, the upgrade also anticipates future transportation needs. The road’s structural platform has been adapted to accommodate a future bike lane, promoting sustainable mobility options in line with modern infrastructure trends. Concrete shoulders have been constructed, providing extra space and safety for cyclists when the lane is implemented. This forward-thinking aspect underscores the collaborative effort between the Diputacion and El Ejido town hall to balance vehicle traffic with environmentally friendly transport modes.
Strong Institutional Cooperation Delivers Results
Officials from both the provincial government and El Ejido municipality recently inspected the completed works. Julia Ibanez, mayor of El Ejido, highlighted the project’s direct benefits for local residents, workers, and visitors, praising the enhanced security and smoother traffic flow. She also expressed gratitude for the Diputacion’s continued support and investment in the municipality’s infrastructure. The project symbolizes the productive collaboration between the two administrations, bringing practical improvements that serve community needs and local economic activity.
In summary, the renewed Matagorda-Almerimar road marks a significant step in strengthening transport links within the Poniente Almeriense area. It ensures safer, more reliable access for daily users while laying groundwork for more sustainable travel options in the future.
