TL;DR: Almeria expands its electric bike-sharing service from 600 to 800 bikes due to strong user demand, supporting sustainable urban mobility and cutting carbon emissions.
Almeria Electric Bike Share Grows
Fleet Expansion and Operators
The city of Almeria has increased the number of electric bikes available for public hire, raising the total from 600 to 800. This growth comes as a joint effort by the two operators currently running the service: Bolt and Hoppy. Each company has added 100 bikes, reflecting the positive reception and steady use of the scheme since its launch in February 2026.
Usage and Environmental Impact
Between February and September, the service recorded more than 35,000 users who completed over 260,000 trips. Collectively, these journeys covered approximately 760,000 kilometres, highlighting the popularity and wide adoption of the e-bike system. The shared bikes have contributed to a reduction of nearly 10 tonnes of CO2 emissions, replacing many journeys that likely would have been made by private vehicle. The typical ride lasts around 20 minutes, indicating the service’s role in everyday travel around the city.
Integration with Urban Mobility
The bikes are pedal-assisted with a top speed capped at 25 km/h, compliant with European regulations. Rental and management of the bikes are handled via mobile apps operated by Bolt and Hoppy. Users must return bikes to designated parking spots throughout Almeria, which are monitored through GPS and technological controls. This structure helps integrate the bike service with other public transport options and supports a seamless, car-free commuting experience.
City Support and Community Involvement
Antonio Casimiro, the city councillor responsible for urban mobility, underscored the significance of the service in transforming how residents move around Almeria. He noted that demand for the electric bikes demonstrates their place in everyday local travel. The city also benefits from the University of Almeria’s cooperation, which provides important locations for bike operations and encourages use among students and staff.
Promoting Sustainable Travel
The fleet expansion coincided with the European Mobility Week celebrations in the city, emphasizing active and sustainable travel options. Events like the Bicycle Festival further promote cycling culture and community engagement. This increased capacity supports Almeria’s broader efforts to reduce reliance on private vehicles and enhance eco-friendly transportation choices across the city.
