TL;DR: Almeria’s city council moves forward with plans to enhance La Termica breakwater, turning it into an accessible public space and cultural venue connected to the city’s main promenade.
Plans for La Termica Breakwater Upgrade
Project Overview and Public Input
The Andalusian Ministry of Sustainability and Environment has officially launched a public consultation period for the redevelopment of La Termica breakwater in Almeria. This project, initiated by the Almeria City Council, aims to improve pedestrian access by linking the breakwater directly to Almeria’s seafront promenade. To enable this connection, public maritime-terrestrial land will be temporarily occupied as part of the work, which now invites feedback and formal objections from citizens and interested parties. Collecting these responses will help finalise the required reports from coastal and regional authorities, a necessary step toward moving the project into the execution phase.
Technical and Design Details
The re-design for La Termica breakwater covers an area of 8,400 square metres, with the ambition to convert it into a spacious communal area featuring sea views and urban outlooks. Engineering firm José Alcalá Ingenieros S.L. prepared the initial project plans, which form the basis for obtaining permits from regional and national administrations. Once authorisations are secured, detailed construction plans will be drawn up to ensure all specifications meet regulatory expectations. The project will include modern infrastructure upgrades: an efficient drainage system, upgraded public lighting, and service networks essential for regular cleaning and beach upkeep.
Accessibility and Urban Amenities
Ensuring ease of access and safety is a core component of the plans. The breakwater will be fitted with accessible urban furniture such as benches, bins, planters, and protective railings. Architectural barriers will be removed to facilitate uninterrupted mobility, especially for those with reduced mobility. The project also highlights enhancements to pathways along the promenade and access points to the beach, complemented by the introduction of shrub and tree planting consistent with city guidelines, creating a greener, more inviting environment.
Balancing Functionality with Coastal Sensitivity
Sacramento Sanchez, Councillor for Public Works and Blue Economy, emphasised that the design carefully balances practical needs and aesthetics. Maintaining the natural coastal dynamics and adapting to the local climate remain top priorities to ensure the project respects the environment it inhabits. The revitalised platform will also be equipped to host cultural events, effectively transforming the breakwater into a vibrant space for community engagement while preserving its role as a coastal landmark.
Next Steps
Following the public consultation, the project team will incorporate feedback and finalise the necessary sectorial evaluations. With the required permits expected, the city council will proceed with refining the technical execution plans. This will set the stage for the upcoming construction work that aims to deliver a refreshed, multifunctional space on the Almeria coastline, enhancing the city’s connection to the sea and providing residents and visitors with a new focal point for leisure and culture.
