TL;DR: Almeria Airport will receive nearly €44 million for runway resurfacing, enhanced security systems, and terminal upgrades as part of a new Spanish airport investment plan.
Major Upgrades Planned for Almeria Airport
Funding Allocation for Almeria Airport
The Spanish government has approved the third Airport Regulatory Document (DORA III) for the 2027-2031 period, earmarking almost €44 million for improvements at Almeria Airport, also known as El Alquian. This substantial investment aims to enhance operational infrastructure, primarily focusing on resurfacing the runway, reinforcing security measures, and implementing various quality upgrades within the terminal building.
Runway and Security Improvements
The funding will primarily support the renewal of the runway surface by raising its pavement to meet safety and performance standards. Upgrades to the airport’s security systems are also planned to ensure enhanced passenger safety and compliance with stricter regulations. These measures are crucial in maintaining Almeria Airport’s capability to serve both commercial and general aviation effectively over the coming years.
The Broader Andalusian Context
Almeria’s investment is part of a wider €1.267 billion capital expenditure scheme across Andalusian airports announced by Aena, Spain’s airport management authority. Málaga Airport will be the largest beneficiary with an allocation of €830 million focused mainly on expanding its terminal facilities. Sevilla and Jerez airports follow, receiving €235 million and €95 million respectively. Almeria’s funding places it ahead of Granada-Jaén’s €42 million and Córdoba’s €18 million budgets, highlighting its growing role in the regional air transport network.
Financial Strategy and Tariff Stability
The government has clarified that this investment programme will be financed through Aena’s own revenue generation, avoiding reliance on the national government budget. This approach enables a practical freeze on airport charges, helping to maintain affordable fees for airlines and passengers while supporting infrastructure improvements. Such financial planning ensures the sustainability of the airport’s development plans without burdening public accounts.
Implications for Almeria’s Connectivity
These upgrades are set to improve Almeria Airport’s operational capacity and passenger experience ahead of anticipated growth in tourism and business travel. With enhanced safety and modernised facilities, the airport will be better positioned to support the province’s economic development and its strategic connectivity within Andalusia and beyond. Visitors and residents alike can expect a more reliable and comfortable gateway to the region in the next five years.
