Sierra de Maria Los Velez Hosts Sixth Burrica
Three Race Options on Challenging Trails
This Saturday, the natural beauty of Sierra de Maria-Los Velez will play host to the sixth edition of ‘La Burrica Trail,’ a mountain running and hiking event organised by Club Deportivo Villa de Maria, in cooperation with the local town hall and the Diputacion Provincial de Almeria. The event is part of the tenth edition of the Provincial Mountain Running Circuit of Almeria and also features in the 2026 Almeria Popular Trail Cup.
The day begins early with the long trail race at 9:00 a.m., covering a demanding course of 25.6 kilometres that includes a positive elevation gain of 1,510 metres. Shortly after, at 9:50 a.m., the MiniTrail, aimed at the cadet category, will start its 13.88-kilometre course with 621 metres of climbing. Finally, at 10:00 a.m., an organised hiking route covering the same shorter distance as the MiniTrail will set off.
Safe and Well-Marked Routes
All three events follow clearly marked trails running over a mix of paths, tracks, and off-trail sections, offering varied mountain terrain to participants. The start and finish line for all routes is located in Plaza de la Encarnacion, the central square of the town. Organisers have ensured the routes conform to official regulations, providing a safe and well-supervised environment for both runners and hikers.
Competition and Awards
The race includes trophies for the top three finishers in all categories, covering both overall and age-group divisions in the different distances. Additionally, clubs compete for awards based on their collective results as part of the Almeria Popular Trail Cup 2026 standings.
Community and Institutional Support
María Luisa Cruz, the provincial deputy for Sports, Healthy Living, and Youth, highlighted the event’s role as the final round of the provincial mountain race circuit. She pointed to the opportunity to showcase Sierra de Maria-Los Velez’s appeal for sporting tourism in the region. Locally, council member Carmen Beteta noted that the event expects around 320 participants across the varied categories. She also expressed gratitude to Club Deportivo Villa de Maria for their organisation, alongside recognition of the support from local authorities, protection services, and volunteers.
The Burrica Trail continues to grow as a highlight in Almeria’s outdoor sports calendar, attracting runners and hikers eager to explore the natural landscapes while testing their endurance in a supportive community atmosphere.
