Weekend Sacred Organ Performances in Almeria
Concerts at Heritage Churches
The second edition of the ‘Organo en Andalucia: Musica y Patrimonio’ concert cycle offers two sacred music performances this weekend in the province of Almeria. Showcasing historic organs, events will be held at the Church of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion in Velez-Rubio and the Parish of Nuestra Senora del Rosario in Gador. The series, organised by the Andalusian regional government’s Culture, Historical Heritage, and Sports Department through the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions, aims to connect audiences with the region’s organ heritage by featuring carefully chosen repertoires aligned with each unique instrument.
Saturday’s Concert in Velez-Rubio
The weekend’s first concert is scheduled for Saturday, 3 October, at 9:00 pm in Velez-Rubio’s main church. German organist Matthias Neumann, known for his international career and deep engagement with historical organs, will perform. Neumann, a professor at the Detmold School of Music and 2012 winner of the Bach Prize awarded in Leipzig, will bring to life works spanning the 17th and 18th centuries. The programme includes compositions by Juan Cabanilles, Sebastian Duron, Johann Caspar von Kerll, Dieterich Buxtehude, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Georg Muffat.
The organ in this church was built in the second half of the 18th century by French organ builder Guillermo D’Enoyer, a craftsman active in Andalusia at that time.
Sunday’s Event in Gador
The series continues on Sunday, 4 October, at 1:00 pm in Gador’s Parish of Nuestra Senora del Rosario. Italian organist Davide Bucci, affiliated with the Choir of the Diocese of Rome and the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria la Mayor, will take the stage. Bucci’s programme travels through different periods of organ music, featuring pieces by Antonio de Cabezon, Manuel Rodrigues Coelho, Jose Lidon, and Eduardo Torres. He has specialised in sacred music and organ improvisation throughout his career.
Gador’s organ dates to 1864 and is housed in the church’s upper choir. Its neoclassical case includes three visible pipe towers and facade trumpetry, making it an instrument both historically and visually striking. This concert highlights the instrument’s place in the town’s musical history while blending repertoire from the 19th and 20th centuries with spontaneous improvisation.
Preserving Andalucia’s Musical Heritage
The ‘Organo en Andalucia’ cycle emphasises the close relationship between the musicians, their chosen repertoires, and the historic organs that host them. These preserved organs form a significant cultural legacy intertwined with the architecture of Andalusian churches and the musical traditions of their communities. Patricia del Pozo, the regional Culture, Historical Heritage and Sports Minister, highlights how the programme encourages rediscovery of Andalusia’s vast cultural wealth and breathes new life into these historic instruments by allowing them to sound once again in the sacred spaces for which they were created.
Through these concerts, listeners have a chance to experience centuries-old craftsmanship and rich musical traditions that continue to shape the cultural identity of the region.
