8th Medieval Archaeology Congress in Almeria

Historic Gathering at Barrio Andalusi

More than a hundred participants convened in Almeria from 27 September to 3 October for the 8th Congress of Medieval Archaeology of Spain and Portugal. This event marks the first time the conference has taken place in Andalusia and is hosted at the Barrio Andalusi Archaeological Site, a key cultural location in the city. The edition attracted over 115 registered attendees, including specialists, researchers, and professionals from across the Iberian Peninsula.

Four Days of Research and Debate

Organised by the Spanish Association of Medieval Archaeology in partnership with Almeria’s Museums Department, the congress highlights the latest trends, discoveries, and research lines in medieval archaeology. Its programme divides into four thematic blocks addressing diverse approaches and methodologies currently shaping the field. Over four days, experts shared presentations, workshops, discussions, and poster sessions, fostering a comprehensive and multifaceted dialogue on medieval archaeological studies.

Local Support and Cultural Impact

Joaquin Perez de la Blanca, Almeria’s councillor for Culture, Education, Museums and Traditions, inaugurated the congress, underlining the significance of holding an event of this character at the emblematic Barrio Andalusi site. He emphasised the city council’s goal to energise this cultural space and strengthen its role as a landmark for both the neighbourhood and the entire city. Perez de la Blanca also expressed gratitude to the organising association and the site’s director, Belen Aleman, who played a vital role in securing Almeria as host.

Expertise and Heritage Experience

Belen Aleman, director of the Barrio Andalusi Archaeological Site, welcomed leading academics from various parts of Spain and Portugal. She referenced the carefully prepared programme, featuring presentations on recent discoveries, advanced methods, and technological innovations applied in archaeological research. Alongside the academic sessions, the congress included guided visits to significant heritage spots in Almeria, such as the Church of San Juan, built upon the remains of the ancient Great Mosque. These excursions aimed to deepen participants’ connection to the city’s rich historical legacy.

Building a Knowledge Network

Elena Salinas, vice-president of the Spanish Association of Medieval Archaeology, acknowledged the strong support from Almeria’s City Council and the Barrio Andalusi site for making the congress possible. The event serves not only as a platform for sharing cutting-edge research but also as a means to strengthen collaboration and exchange among the medieval archaeology community in Spain and Portugal. The Almeria congress highlighted the city’s growing prominence as a centre for cultural and scientific activities related to its archaeological treasures.
