TL;DR: The new anime-style short film ‘The Surrender’ showcases Andalusia’s unique landscapes and heritage, blending local culture with Japanese animation and a soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, highlighting Almeria’s Tabernas Desert and Pulpí Geode .

Almeria Stars in Andalusia Anime Film

A distinctive animation debut in Malaga

The short film ‘The Surrender’ premiered at the Malaga Comic-Con, offering a striking fusion of eastern anime aesthetics and the rich local culture of Andalusia. Created by Ogilvy Spain for Turismo de Andalucía, the nearly seven-minute animation closes the acclaimed ‘Andalusian Crush’ campaign, inviting viewers into a vivid world where Japanese animation styles intersect with southern Spain’s heritage sites.

Exploring Andalusia through a gamer’s eyes

The story follows Mitsuki, a young Japanese woman who steps into a Tokyo arcade and suddenly finds herself immersed in an alternate reality. In this new world, Mitsuki journeys through symbolic “levels,” each inspired by one of Andalusia’s eight provinces. The narrative cleverly incorporates elements from popular video game genres and nods to iconic titles such as ‘Assassin’s Creed,’ ‘Street Fighter,’ and ‘Red Dead Redemption.’ The progression captures Andalusian culture, history, and landscapes using familiar gaming mechanics, presenting them through a fresh, imaginative lens.

Almeria’s landscapes play starring roles

Among the provinces featured, Almeria provides two visually and culturally significant highlights. The legendary Tabernas Desert, known worldwide as a backdrop for classic westerns immortalized by Sergio Leone, emerges in the final scenes, reinforcing its cinematic legacy. Along the way, Mitsuki encounters the Geode of Pulpí, whose glittering crystal caves evoke a fortress-like image reminiscent of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. These settings showcase Almeria’s blend of natural wonder and cultural significance, rooted deeply in both its geography and film history.

A symphonic journey scored by Hans Zimmer

The film’s emotional impact is elevated by an original score composed by Hans Zimmer, a two-time Oscar winner celebrated for his work on films like ‘The Lion King,’ ‘Interstellar,’ and ‘Dune.’ Building on his 2025 homage to Andalusia titled ‘Surrender,’ Zimmer crafts a new symphonic piece that accompanies Mitsuki’s travel across Andalusia. This musical backdrop enriches the immersive experience, linking the diverse visual storytelling elements with a powerful auditory dimension.

Connecting folklore, history, and pop culture

As Mitsuki progresses through the levels, the film weaves references to key Andalusian cultural landmarks and traditions. Viewers encounter allusions to the works of Federico García Lorca, the baroque architecture of Seville, the Moorish silhouette of Granada’s Albaicin and Alhambra, the olive groves of Jaén, and the labyrinthine Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. This artistic approach creates a layered homage that bridges history, folklore, and contemporary pop influences, presenting Andalusia as a timeless source of inspiration beyond its borders.
