Gador’s Naranjazz festival returns

Gador will host the fifth edition of Naranjazz Festival on 11, 12 and 13 September, with a programme designed to bring concerts, workshops, exhibitions and family activities together across the town.

The festival has been presented by the Diputacion Provincial de Almeria and Gador Town Hall, with support from the Asociación Musical Villa de Gádor. It returns with a broad musical programme that includes jazz alongside other styles and sounds, continuing the event’s open approach to culture.

More than 15 concerts will be free to attend during the three-day programme, according to festival director José Carlos Hernández. The schedule will also include activities intended for different ages and abilities, with the organisers describing Naranjazz as an accessible event for the wider community.

A broad musical programme

The line-up reflects the festival’s mix of genres and performers. Announced artists and formations include Big Bandarax Vocal Collective; Coro Góspel & Big Band Clasijazz; Entre Triana & La Habana with José Luis Jaén; Banda A.M. de Gádor & Big Bandarax with Julián Sánchez; Víctor Guirado & La Banda Nómada; Caguamaconda; Al Swing y al Cabo; Teen Sextet; Combo Malandro; Kalima du Samba; Gata Brass Band; Mar Tiago; 4 Planes; Triplanetas; Patax; Capullitas de Alelí; La Juan Román and Andrés Barrios 4et.

The programme is intended to move beyond a single musical category or audience. Nieves Alonso, president of the Asociación Musical Villa de Gádor, said the festival does not want to remain limited to one style or generation. She also highlighted the place given to artists from Almeria and the aim of making the cultural programme open to the whole community, regardless of gender, diversity or ability.

Alongside the concerts, workshops and exhibitions will add other ways for visitors and local residents to take part. The organisers say the different activities will bring a range of musical styles to wider audiences and turn the municipality into a meeting place centred on culture.

Support from local institutions

The presentation included María José Herrada, provincial deputy; Lourdes Ramos, mayor of Gador; María Mercedes Artés, councillor for Culture; and representatives of the Asociación Musical Villa de Gádor.

Herrada described the fifth edition as evidence of the festival’s development and praised its role as a cultural meeting point at the end of the summer in Gador. She also pointed to the municipality’s continued commitment to culture and music in its different forms.

The provincial deputy stressed the importance of cooperation between institutions in helping smaller municipalities deliver substantial cultural programmes. The event brings together Gador Town Hall, the Diputacion Provincial de Almeria and the Junta de Andalucia, alongside the organisations working directly on the festival.

Mayor Lourdes Ramos underlined the scale of the event for a municipality of around 3,300 residents. She said Gador would become “the capital of culture” during the three festival days and thanked the people and organisations involved in making Naranjazz possible.

Growing through collaboration

The Asociación Musical Villa de Gádor and Clasijazz are working together on the festival, a partnership Hernández said has helped the project grow. He invited audiences to come to Gador simply to enjoy the music, with the free concert programme forming the central part of the event.

The fifth edition therefore combines established cultural support with a programme that seeks to remain varied and inclusive. Its concerts, workshops, exhibitions and family activities will take place over three days, giving the town a concentrated programme of live music and cultural events.

For visitors from elsewhere in Almeria province, Naranjazz offers a chance to experience the festival in Gador while also seeing how a small municipality is using music and community participation to build a distinctive cultural event.
