Free guided routes continue through September

The Murallas del Cerro de San Cristobal have welcomed 363 visitors during their first two months of guided tours, giving the public a closer look at one of the most important defensive remains of Andalusian Almeria.

The programme began on 9 July following restoration and recovery work at the historic walls. It will continue through September, when the Junta has arranged a further 20 free guided visits for people interested in the fortification, its history and its development over time.

Two months of visits

According to information provided by sources from the Andalusian Government to Europa Press, the site hosted 14 visits in July, attended by 176 people. A further 16 routes took place in August, with 187 visitors.

The September programme offers another opportunity to see the restored site as part of a guided route. The visits also explain the work carried out on the walls and outline the future prospects for research, conservation and the presentation of the fortification and its surrounding urban setting.

Each route lasts approximately one hour. Visits are scheduled for Tuesdays from 20:00 to 21:00, while the Thursday, Friday and Sunday sessions run from 09:00 to 10:00.

How to join the route

Appointments can be arranged through the booking platform for the Conjunto Monumental de La Alcazaba. The meeting point is at the statue of the Sagrado Corazon, from where the guided walk begins.

The September visits are free, but visitors must arrange a place through the designated booking system. The schedule provides both evening and morning options, depending on the day of the week.

The route gives visitors access to parts of the defensive complex that were not generally available during the restoration works. Following the completion of those works and the installation of new security systems, the public can enter the adarve and the towers of the Murallas del Cerro de San Cristobal.

A key defensive landmark

The walls form part of the Bien de Interes Cultural known as ‘Alcazaba y Murallas del Cerro de San Cristobal’. Together, the site represents one of the clearest surviving examples of the defensive landscape of Andalusian Almeria.

The heritage designation covers two distinct elements. The Alcazaba was built as an enclosed fortress on the hill overlooking the Islamic city. The second element consists of the surviving first sections of the walls around the former Oratorio suburb.

That suburb was an extension of the medina, developed in the 11th century during the Taifa period, when Almeria became the capital of an important independent kingdom. The walls therefore offer more than a view of military architecture: they also reflect the expansion and changing importance of the medieval city.

Restoration and access

The guided visits form part of the reopening of the site after restoration and recovery work. During the tour, visitors are introduced to the restoration process as well as the plans for continued study and conservation.

The wider monument was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. Its protected status recognises the close relationship between the Alcazaba, the Cerro de San Cristobal walls and the historic urban area they once defended.
