Record Participation at La Desertica 2026
Unprecedented Scale and Route
The eighth edition of La Desertica is scheduled for October 17, 2026, promising to be the largest yet with a record 7,600 participants expected. This multi-discipline ultramarathon spans 15 municipalities, beginning in the city of Almeria and concluding in the Parque de Los Bajos in Roquetas de Mar. The race course links several key territory points, including the military Base Alvarez de Sotomayor, regarded unofficially as the province’s “104th municipality” due to its size and significance.
Expanded Categories and Improved Support
This year’s event will continue to blend sport with local identity and solidarity, core values shared between La Legion and the people of Almeria. Organisers have extended the Mini Desertica category, catering to younger or less experienced runners, and broadened inclusion efforts within the mountaineering segment. The event will implement enhanced geolocation technology for better tracking, improved supplies along the route, refined race planning, and upgraded participant services aimed at boosting safety and comfort.
Community, Military, and Government Collaboration
At the presentation event, José Antonio García Alcaina, president of the Diputacion de Almeria, highlighted the race’s growth as one of Spain’s most demanding ultramarathons, embodying values such as teamwork, perseverance, discipline, and solidarity. He also stressed the deepening connection between La Legion and Almeria’s society, noting the event’s role in strengthening mutual admiration and cooperation. The road race illustrates the effective collaboration between military and civilian communities.
General Juan Carlos Moreno Arenas of La Legion described La Desertica as a “catalyst for activity” moving through diverse landscapes—from urban centres to the Sierra de Gador mountains and the Mediterranean coastline. José Maria Martin, Almeria’s subdelegate of the Government, emphasised the importance of meticulous preparation and institutional coordination, commending the National Police and Guardia Civil for ensuring the event’s safe and orderly execution.
Boosting Tourism and Economy
Francisco Gongora, delegate of the Junta de Andalucia in Almeria, pointed out that La Desertica draws thousands of visitors each year who discover the province’s unique scenery and villages. An impact study undertaken by the organisers estimated an economic boost exceeding 3.2 million euros as a direct result of the event. Overall, La Desertica mobilises more than 30,000 people including participants, support teams, and accompanying visitors, significantly benefiting the regional tourism industry.
Sport as a Unifying Force
More than just a sporting challenge, La Desertica embodies a spirit of unity in Almeria. The event brings together athletes, military personnel, local communities, and authorities in a shared celebration of endurance and resilience. Its extensive route showcases the diverse environments of the province, while its growing scale highlights the successful blending of sport, social values, and economic development. For residents and visitors alike, La Desertica is a highlight that reinforces Almeria’s reputation on the national sporting map and as a welcoming destination for large-scale outdoor events.
