TL;DR: Antas unveils its new Espacio Escénico, a modern cultural venue with flexible seating, designed by local architects, and inaugurated with a live concert on 17 September.
New Espacio Escénico Opens in Antas
A long-awaited community space
After years of cultural activity without a proper venue, the town of Antas is finally opening its doors to a new Espacio Escénico on 17 September. This modern performance space comes after significant investment from the Diputación Provincial, which granted nearly 1.3 million euros from provincial development funds. For a municipality known to locals for its vibrant cultural life, this venue fills a notable gap, giving Antas a proper, homologated place to host events and gatherings.
Innovative design with local roots
The Espacio Escénico stands on a 1,700 m² plot at the intersection of Zurgena and Puente streets, tucked beneath the charming old Guardería building. The design is both creative and practical. It offers seating for 169 indoors, expandable to 600 by opening up to an adjoining outdoor amphitheater. This flexibility allows the space to transform into an open-air theatre or a large auditorium depending on the event’s needs. Facilities include dressing rooms, bathrooms, and a projection room on the lower level, with a spacious lobby featuring large sliding glass panels that blur the boundary between inside and out.
This local pride extends beyond bricks and mortar. The project’s architects, Luis Cano and Mariela Cano—who also led the construction works—are from the area, ensuring the space reflects Antas’s character and ambitions.
Inauguration and cultural kick-off
The inauguration on the evening of 17 September promises a warm, community-focused celebration. The event features performances from the Asociación Musical Azahar and the Coro Virgen de la Cabeza. Their program will include beloved songs by Mocedades, a group with a strong regional following. Attendees can enjoy this musical tribute in the atmosphere of the new venue and then share a traditional Spanish wine, fostering a genuine local festival vibe.
Local authorities will be present, including José Antonio García, president of the Diputación Provincial, and Antas’s mayor, Pedro Ridao. The mayor spoke openly about the paradox of Antas’s cultural richness previously lacking a proper stage, highlighting the new venue’s role in energising the town’s social life.
Broad ambitions for Antas
This new cultural space forms part of a broader push to improve public infrastructure in Antas. The town has already seen the opening of the Centro de Interpretación de la Cultura Argárica (CICA), and a covered sports centre is also on the way. According to the mayor, these developments are steadily addressing long-standing needs and enhancing quality of life. The mayor also expressed gratitude toward the Diputación and the people involved in the project, recognising that community-driven efforts and political support have made this important step possible.
Now open, the Espacio Escénico aims to be more than just a building. Its success will depend on filling it with events and life, making it a lasting cultural hub where residents and visitors alike can engage with the heart of Antas.
