European Mobility Week Events
Accessible transport for everyone
From September 16 to 22, Almería’s local government and metropolitan transport consortium are bringing the community together for the 2026 European Mobility Week. This year’s theme, “Mobility for All – Intergenerational Equity,” underscores the importance of accessible, affordable, and sustainable transport for all residents, no matter their income, gender, or abilities. The initiative aims to raise awareness about inclusive mobility and the role it plays in a better urban life.
The city’s focus goes beyond just encouraging the use of public transport. It highlights the need to eliminate barriers and offer options that serve people across all generations—from the youngest to the oldest—ensuring those with different abilities or economic backgrounds aren’t left behind.
Music on the move and free journeys
One of the week’s standout features is a series of unusual cultural events: classical music concerts performed inside moving buses. Musicians from the Orquesta Ciudad de Almería (OCAL) will fill selected buses with live performances, providing passengers a unique way to enjoy the cityscape while listening to quality orchestral pieces.
Adding extra incentive to leave the car at home, the public will find free rides on selected metropolitan bus lines during the event. This free service invites people to explore Almería’s metro area without worrying about tickets, promoting public transit as a practical and eco-friendly option.
Active participation and urban bike rides
The week is packed with community events that encourage walking, cycling, and learning about road safety. Schools will host talks on sustainable mobility and road education, aiming to engage young citizens on how they can contribute to a greener Almería.
A highlight on Saturday, 19 September, is the Fiesta de la Bicicleta, aptly nicknamed “Move for Your City,” starting at the iconic Cable Inglés. It’s tailored as a festive gathering for families, young people, and seniors alike to celebrate cycling as a fun and healthy way to get around. The event reflects Almería’s mild climate, which invites outdoor activity year-round and supports plans to expand bike usage across the city.
Supporting affordable and inclusive transport
This year has seen essential improvements in transport accessibility and ticketing affordability. The Junta de Andalucía’s “tarjeta verde” (green card) offers more than a 50% discount on single tickets, benefiting many users. Families with economic challenges and young residents enjoy additional concessions, with free transport for under-15s and half-price fares for those under 30.
Significant public investments have gone into removing architectural barriers, enhancing infrastructure accessibility, and developing intuitive digital tools. These efforts make it easier for everyone—from people with disabilities to older adults—to plan trips and receive real-time transit information, helping create a truly inclusive transport network.
Collaboration drives progress
The collaboration between Almería’s City Council and the Metropolitan Transport Consortium is at the heart of the week’s success. Since joining forces, they have worked steadily to integrate urban and regional transport services more effectively, breaking down the longstanding divisions that once complicated mobility in the area.
This partnership also ensures that state and regional transportation subsidies and discounts reach the public efficiently. As Luis Miguel Carmona, Consortium director, states, the goal is to foster greater intermodal transport use—not just buses or bikes—but a seamless network that supports sustainable urban living.

For locals and visitors sharing Almería’s streets and transport systems, this week is more than a series of events—it’s an invitation to rethink how we move around and connect with the city, making it more inclusive and enjoyable for all. If you’re in Almería in mid-September, hopping on a free metro bus or joining a bike ride could be a refreshing way to experience your city anew.
