TL;DR: Almeria launches ‘Muevete por Almeria,’ a new series of guided kayaking , hiking, and cycling routes designed to explore the city’s natural, historical, and cultural landmarks through active outdoor experiences.

New Active Routes in Almeria

Introducing the Program

The city of Almeria has unveiled an innovative initiative called ‘Muevete por Almeria,’ aiming to encourage residents and visitors alike to explore the city in an active and engaging way. This program, developed by the Area of Ciudad Activa, Movilidad Urbana y Deporte, combines physical activity with cultural discovery by offering a variety of kayaking, hiking, and cycling routes. The objective is to promote movement, enjoyment, and a deeper understanding of Almeria’s diverse spaces, from its coastline to its urban heritage sites.

Kayak Trips along the Coast

‘Muevete por Almeria’ includes two sea kayaking excursions that allow participants to admire the city’s coastline from the water. The first trip is scheduled for 26 September, starting at 10:00 from Palmeral Beach. This route will take paddlers along the shore to notable landmarks such as the historic Cable Ingles pier before returning to the starting point. The second kayaking route, originally set for 19 September, has been postponed to 11 October at 10:00 due to windy conditions. These outings offer a unique way to combine exercise with scenic views, encouraging participants to experience the coastal environment from the sea.

Walking Routes Focused on Heritage and Film

The program also features four hiking routes centered on different themes: urban exploration, heritage, and cinema. One family-friendly itinerary will highlight locations where famous films were shot in Almeria, providing a cinematic lens on the city’s streets and squares. These film-themed walks are scheduled for 10 and 31 October and will be guided by José Enrique Martínez, author of ‘Almeria de cine,’ who will share insights about the movies and scenes linked to each stop. Additionally, two other walking tours will explore Almeria’s main plazas, emphasizing their historical and cultural significance, led by Alfonso Ruiz and Irene Valera on 22 and 28 November.

Cycling Routes Connecting the City

For those who prefer biking, two routes are planned: the first on 4 October and another on 14 November. One of these will take riders towards the university area, while the other will connect various parks across Almeria through existing cycling infrastructure such as bike lanes, cycle streets, and bike-friendly sidewalks. These rides aim to showcase different parts of the city in an accessible way for cyclists, combining outdoor activity with urban appreciation.

Ongoing Access and Participation Details

To ensure long-term engagement with these routes, the organizers will provide geolocated itineraries accessible via QR codes. This will make it possible for locals and tourists to explore the routes independently after the scheduled guided events. All related content will be available on the city council’s website, www.almeriaciudad.es/pmd, including detailed route maps and background information on each location. Group sizes are limited to 40 for hiking and 20 for both kayaking and cycling to ensure a quality experience. Nestor Waisen of Kúspide Aventura, who coordinates the activities, highlights that this approach allows participants to discover Almeria’s spaces while enjoying exercise in a meaningful way.

Through ‘Muevete por Almeria,’ the city continues to promote an active lifestyle combined with cultural enrichment — inviting everyone to get moving, explore, and appreciate Almeria from new perspectives.
