Morada Sonica Experimental Sound Festival

Festival Highlights and Lineup

From October 1 to 3, Almeria once again becomes a hub for experimental and contemporary sound art with the 14th edition of the International Festival Morada Sonica. This year’s event gathers artists from various countries, blending innovative electronic music, sound experimentation, and visual elements. The festival program aims to create a space for exploration and discovery, presenting diverse approaches to listening and artistic creation.

The evening concerts start at 9 p.m. on all three days. Opening night at the Escuela Municipal de Musica y Artes de Almeria (EMMA) features Swiss trumpeter and composer Markus Breuss performing alongside Japanese pianist and improviser Tsukiko Amakawa, with local artist Severine Beata also on the roster. The second evening hosts Barcelona’s Yexza Lara and Portuguese artist Alfredo Costa Monteiro, again at EMMA. The festival closes with a final concert at Teatro Apolo, spotlighting hometown performers Mynationshit and I Am Quivi.

Tickets are priced at 15 euros per session or 30 euros for a pass covering all three nights, available at the Teatro Apolo box office and online through the official platform.

Festival Vision and Cultural Support

Joaquin Perez de la Blanca, Almeria’s Culture Councillor, highlights Morada Sonica as an opportunity to engage with art forms that challenge conventional routes and explore new ways of experiencing sound and audiovisual creation. The festival forms an integral part of the Autumn Cultural season backed by the city’s Department of Culture, Education, Museums and Traditions.

Festival coordinator Josep Maria Soler emphasizes Morada Sonica’s role in fostering spaces for experimental sound practices. Over fourteen editions, it has become a meeting point devoted to hearing as a creative tool and introducing audiences to unconventional artistic territories. The 2026 edition continues this mission by showcasing diverse artistic perspectives and encouraging encounters with unexpected sonic experiences.

Workshops and Educational Activities

Along with the performance program, Morada Sonica offers a series of free workshops designed to delve into contemporary sound creation techniques. Held at EMMA during the festival days, these sessions require prior registration through the festival website.

The workshops open on October 1 with Maria Duran leading a session focused on sound synthesis and design for audiovisuals using modular systems like VCV Rack. On the following day, Liborio Lopez presents a workshop centered on electronic instruments.

Saturday features two workshops: Alfredo Costa Monteiro hosts a collective listening experience titled “Auscultare” in the morning, while the afternoon session offers an introduction to SuperCollider, a platform for sound synthesis and algorithmic composition, presented by Jose Fernando Melero. These workshops welcome participants of all levels, requiring no previous knowledge.

Featured Artists

Markus Breuss, a Swiss musician born in 1956, is known for his eclectic style blending free jazz, electroacoustic music, and free improvisation. His collaborations include work with notable figures such as Llorecn Barber and Christian Marclay.

Tsukiko Amakawa from Japan is recognized for her distinctive improvisational approach and incorporation of everyday sounds into contemporary experimental compositions.

Local artist Severine Beata, also known as Marta Pelaez, merges minimalism, sci-fi ambient, and noise music. She performs mostly as a solo artist manipulating analog and digital synthesizers live. Her experimental work often draws on folk melodies and cycles, and she has showcased her music at venues like the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and MediaLab Prado.

Community Engagement and Future Prospects

Morada Sonica continues to strengthen Almeria’s reputation in the contemporary arts scene by offering a platform for both emerging and established experimental sound artists. By combining international talent with local creators and adding an educational dimension, the festival plays a vital role in broadening public access to avant-garde art forms.

With its clear focus on sonic innovation and community involvement, Morada Sonica reflects a growing commitment within Almeria to foster cultural experiences that challenge audiences and inspire new creative dialogues well beyond the festival dates.
