Dominant First Day at Titan Desert Almeria
New Routes Challenge Riders
After a year of changes including a fresh course and a new main venue, the Škoda Titan Desert Almeria kicked off its 2026 edition with a technically demanding loop around Mojacar. Over 570 riders, including many returning champions, faced a challenging stage that tested endurance and skill in the rugged landscape of Sierra Cabrera. The climb early in the day set the tone, fracturing the peloton and allowing aggressive contenders to break away.
Luis León Sánchez Leads from the Front
Luis León Sánchez, competing alongside his brothers Pedro and Antonio, made a decisive move around the 20-kilometre mark on the Sierra Cabrera climb. From there, he powered ahead alone, maintaining a steady pace that his rivals couldn’t match. Finishing more than three minutes ahead of the second-placed Bruno Rosa, the Murcia-born GESA Sports rider confirmed his strong form and clear intent to defend his title. The young Daniel Martínez, only 21, rounded out the podium in a promising display.
Fischer Sets Pace in Women’s Race
Natalia Fischer adopted a similar tactic on the same climb, breaking away from tough competitor Tessa Kortekaas. The Extremadura native kept a consistent rhythm despite minor route-navigation issues, steadily increasing her lead. She crossed the finish line alone with an 18-minute advantage over Kortekaas. María Esther Maqueda secured third place, maintaining a solid position for the Junta team. Fischer’s performance marked a confident return and positioned her strongly to claim her second Škoda Titan Desert win.
Inspirational Spirit on the Trail
Amidst the competition, rider Léster Fernández stood out not only for his determination but for the extra challenges he overcomes. Living with an 83% disability due to a combination of illness and an accident, Léster is a well-known figure in the Titan World Series community for his resilience and positivity. Despite a serious fall in the 2025 Titan Desert Morocco that affected his spine, he returned to racing in 2026 with undiminished spirit. Post-stage comments highlighted that his recovery had stabilized, allowing him to continue his participation without further setbacks.
Stunning Almeria Landscapes
The demanding first stage was matched by spectacular scenery along the Mediterranean coast. Riders competed close to the sea, navigating technical terrain with views that captured the essence of Almeria’s rugged natural beauty. The backdrop of Mojacar’s hills added a dramatic element to the race and reminded all present why the region remains a favourite for endurance cycling events.
