Rodriguez shines on Alto de Aitana

Cristian Rodriguez has strengthened his position at La Vuelta with a standout ride on the Alto de Aitana. The cyclist from El Ejido finished fifth on the ninth stage, just 20 seconds behind stage winner Enric Mas, and ended the first week of the race in 13th place overall.

Riding for XDS Astana, Rodriguez is now 9:42 behind Mas in the general classification. The result gives the Almeria rider a stronger platform for the second week, which will include one of the most demanding stages of the race in his home province.

Aitana breakthrough

The ninth stage covered 187.4 kilometres from La Vila Joiosa to the Alto de Aitana. It was a difficult mountain test for the riders competing for the general classification, coming immediately before the first rest day.

Rodriguez stayed with the leading contenders and crossed the finish line in fifth place. Only Mas, Oscar Onley, Primoz Roglic and Felix Gall finished ahead of him. His gap to Mas was just 20 seconds, underlining how close he was to the strongest riders on the climb.

The result also confirmed that his earlier performance was not an isolated showing. Rodriguez had finished eighth on the sixth stage between Alcossebre and Castello, crossing the line 1:38 behind winner Tadej Pogacar. That ride had already placed him among several of the race’s leading candidates.

At Aitana, he went one step further.

Climbing the standings

The fifth-place finish lifted Rodriguez to 13th in the overall classification. Several of the main favourites remain ahead of him, but the current gaps mean that the standings are still open, particularly with many mountain stages still to come.

More importantly, Rodriguez has shown that he can remain competitive when the race becomes difficult. His results on stages six and nine have given him a clear position among the riders to watch as La Vuelta enters its second week.

For the rider from El Ejido, the immediate challenge will be to maintain that level through the next stages. La Vuelta takes its first rest day on Monday before returning to racing on Tuesday with a stage from Alcaraz to Elche de la Sierra.

The peloton will then face a stage between Cartagena and Lorca that is expected to be less selective, before heading towards Almeria.

Home roads ahead

The race will reach the province on Thursday 3 September for its 12th stage. The route will cover 166.6 kilometres and include two first-category climbs: Velefique and Calar Alto.

On paper, it is one of the key stages of the second week. It should provide another major test for the general classification, while giving Rodriguez the chance to race in front of supporters in his home province.

That stage will also offer a clearer indication of whether he can move beyond his current 13th position. He arrives in Almeria having already proved that he can stay close to the leading riders on demanding climbs, rather than simply aiming to survive them.

A chance to progress

Rodriguez’s position remains provisional, with plenty of racing still ahead. However, his recent results have changed the picture around his campaign. An eighth-place finish on stage six was followed by fifth at Aitana, and those performances have moved him closer to the higher places in the general classification.

The race has only just begun its second week, but the Almeria rider is no longer an outsider on the margins of the contest. His next opportunity will come on roads that are particularly significant to the local cycling community, with Velefique and Calar Alto providing a demanding home-stage test.

For now, the numbers point upwards: 13th overall, 9:42 behind the leader and within reach of several riders ahead of him.
