III Carrera Solidaria Cristo de la Luz in Dalias
A Race Rooted in History
Every year, many make their way to Dalias for its main festivities, some on foot driven by devotion to the Cristo de la Luz. This September 19, a third option emerges: the III Carrera Solidaria Cristo de la Luz, a nine-kilometer run connecting El Ejido and Dalias. More than a race, it honours the enduring relationship between the firefighters from Bomberos del Poniente and the town, forged over three decades ago during the dramatic church fire of September 1993. This fire threatened the beloved Christ icon, which firefighters managed to save amid the flames, creating a strong bond that continues to shape local traditions.
Solidarity Through Sport
The Carrera Solidaria is held on the eve of Dalias’s main celebration day, blending athleticism and charity. Participants run not only to reach the finish line but to support VIDASOLO1, an association of firefighters and healthcare professionals dedicated to teaching emergency response skills. VIDASOLO1 offers free courses in CPR, first aid, fire prevention, and choking response throughout the year, aiming to equip schools, community groups, and associations with essential lifesaving knowledge. Funds raised by the race help sustain these programmes, purchase training equipment, and back other social initiatives.
Firefighters in Full Gear
A striking sight during the race is the Bomberos del Poniente firefighters tackling the challenging return route dressed fully in their intervention uniforms. Their presence is a living reminder of their history with Dalias and of their ongoing commitment. Beyond the run, they play a visible role in the town’s festivities. Each September, firefighters join the poignant moment known as the Bajada, when the image of Cristo de la Luz is gently lowered from its altar to the procession throne, a ceremony charged with deep local meaning.
Community and Tradition
The Carrera Solidaria is more than a sporting event—it is a communal act of remembrance and support. Starting from El Ejido, the route draws neighbours and runners to a shared experience that transcends competition. At roughly 7:30 pm, the race concludes in Dalias with a traditional offering to the Santisimo Cristo de la Luz, marking the union of sport, faith, and local solidarity. This event keeps alive a historical link while promoting practical skills that can save lives—a meaningful way to honour past bravery and continue strengthening community bonds.
