TL;DR: A severe weather alert has prompted an urgent Civil Protection meeting as heavy rains and storms threaten Almeria, particularly Los Velez and Almanzora , with significant flooding risks expected on Friday.
Emergency Response to Severe Weather in Almeria
Worsening Weather Triggers Emergency Response
The Unidad de Valoracion de Riesgos de Proteccion Civil held an emergency meeting on Thursday, 1 October, following worsening weather forecasts issued by the Agencia Estatal de Meteorologia (AEMET). The region of Almeria faces a growing threat of heavy rain and storms, with the initial yellow alert expected to escalate to an orange alert starting Friday, particularly affecting Los Velez and Almanzora. Meanwhile, areas such as Levante, Nacimiento, and Campo de Tabernas remain on yellow alert.
Severe Conditions Across Eastern Spain
Although Almeria is under close watch, the most extreme impacts are forecast for parts of the Valencian Community and Catalonia, including coastal and pre-coastal zones where torrential rain could lead to accumulations exceeding 90 mm in one hour and 200-300 mm over less than 12 hours. Castellon, Tarragona, and Valencia provinces remain on red alert from Thursday evening until Friday noon, raising concern for potential swift flooding and disruptions.
Coordinated Efforts to Manage Risks
The urgent meeting convened a broad range of officials and experts: representatives from Civil Protection, AEMET, the Ministry for Ecological Transition’s Water Directorate General, the Jucar Hydrographic Confederation, road and traffic authorities, railway operators Renfe and Adif, as well as Aena and ENAIRE for airport oversight. Security forces, including the Guardia Civil and National Police, alongside defense ministry liaisons and regional government delegates from neighboring autonomous communities, also participated. The session was chaired by Virginia Barcones, Secretary General of Civil Protection and Emergencies, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for Thursday evening.
Significant Risks for Almeria
Despite the most intense rainfall expected elsewhere, Almeria faces its own serious concerns. AEMET highlights “important” danger levels across Los Velez and Almanzora on Friday, with localized strong to very strong storms predicted. The Ministry of the Interior has issued warnings that heavy showers could cause sudden flash floods in low-lying areas, dry riverbeds (ramblas), and creek beds. Such conditions elevate the risk of rapid flooding, requiring residents and visitors to remain vigilant.
Precautions and Preparedness
Given the evolving weather situation, authorities advise caution in affected areas. Flash flooding can develop rapidly, particularly during persistent downpours combined with thunderstorms. Monitoring official updates, avoiding travel in vulnerable zones during alerts, and following guidance from emergency services remain essential steps to mitigate risks. The ongoing coordination between meteorological agencies, emergency services, and infrastructure bodies aims to ensure timely responses and safeguard communities throughout Almeria and beyond.
