Fresh Views on Almeria’s Alcazaba Walls
Start of a new season for Amigos de la Alcazaba
The cultural association Amigos de la Alcazaba opens its latest season on Thursday, September 17, continuing its mission to share, protect, and celebrate Almeria’s heritage. Their inaugural event is a free lecture by Professor Jesús Martínez Martínez, taking place at 7:30 pm in the Hermitage of the Alcazaba. This marks a fresh chapter in the group’s ongoing efforts to engage the community with the city’s historic fortress and surrounding walls.
Unveiling an original view of Almeria’s walls
Professor Jesús Martínez, a native of Almeria and a university lecturer at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will present new research on the Alcazaba and the medieval fortifications that shaped Almeria. His work, developed alongside Professor Diego Casas Ripoll and recently published by the University of Las Palmas, offers insights that have not been widely shared before. Attendees can expect to learn about the detailed features of the walls, their construction, and their role in the city’s growth during the medieval period.
Focus on Almeria’s Islamic golden age
The lecture shines a light on Almeria’s most brilliant era, under Muslim rule, when the city was one of the most influential in the Iberian Peninsula. This period saw advances in agriculture with new crops introduced, as well as significant progress in sciences such as geography, medicine, geometry, and algebra. The region also thrived in fields like alchemy and chemistry, textile production—especially silk—and craftsmanship. Almeria’s cultural landscape flourished with the establishment of madrasas, large libraries, and a strong tradition of literature and poetry. Architecturally, the city developed notable monuments that reflected its prosperity.
Almeria’s historic port and wider connections
The city’s importance extended beyond its walls through a bustling port that connected the Mediterranean and North Africa. Merchant ships from Almeria traveled as far as Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean, fostering a dynamic commercial atmosphere. This golden period endured until the conquest of the city by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489, which marked the end of Almeria’s era as a major Mediterranean power.
Water management and sunset views at the Alcazaba
The lecture also promises an in-depth look at the innovative ways water was managed within the Alcazaba and the city’s fortifications, an aspect crucial for maintaining life and defence. Beyond the historical exploration, visitors will have the chance to experience one of the last summer sunsets from the Alcazaba’s vantage point, offering a moment to reflect on the layers of history visible in the fortress and city below before the monument’s summer opening hours conclude.
This event comes with support from the regional cultural authorities and the Alcazaba monument management, emphasizing collaborative preservation and public education efforts. Those interested in Almeria’s heritage and history won’t want to miss this unique opportunity to gain fresh knowledge in a stunning, historic setting.
