Flood Risk Prompts Almeria Alert Level 1
Activation of Flood Emergency Plan
The regional government has activated the Emergency Plan Against Flood Risk at operational level 1 for Almeria and several other provinces, including Granada, Jaen, Cordoba, Seville, and Huelva. This precautionary measure responds to storm alerts forecasted for Friday, prompting the authorities to advise the public to avoid flood-prone areas and refrain from crossing water-logged roads. Antonio Sanz, vice president and official in charge of Presidency, Health, and Emergencies, emphasized the importance of following safety instructions and the emergency number 112.
Weather Warnings and Expected Rainfall
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued various orange and yellow alerts corresponding to the severity of anticipated storms. In Almeria and Granada, orange warnings have been issued for rainfall reaching up to 30 litres per square metre, expected between midday and midnight. Several districts within these provinces, such as the Almanzora Valley, Los Velez, Guadix, and Baza, are likely to experience these heavier showers. Meanwhile, yellow warnings indicate potentially intense rainfall and thunderstorms in other districts, with hourly accumulations estimated up to 20 litres per square metre.
Areas Under Specific Alerts
Detailed warnings cover distinct geographic zones. The Levante Almeriense and the Nacimiento and Campo de Tabernas areas in Almeria face yellow alerts from mid-morning or noon until midnight. In Jaen, areas including Morena and Condado, Cazorla and Segura, and regions within the Guadalquivir Valley are also on yellow alert during similar hours. For Cordoba, Seville, and Huelva, the northern mountainous areas and surrounding towns will experience yellow storm alerts late Friday night through early Saturday morning.
Safety Recommendations
Authorities have urged residents and visitors to avoid low-lying riverbeds and floodplains, stressing the risks of attempting to cross flooded streets. The call to action highlights personal safety as paramount during these weather conditions. Emergency updates will be provided through official channels as the situation develops. Staying informed and heeding warnings from Aemet and emergency services remains critical throughout this period.
The precautionary measures and alerts serve to protect communities as the storm systems are expected to bring heavy rainfall across Almeria and neighboring provinces. Residents should remain vigilant and plan accordingly to minimize risks associated with sudden flooding or severe weather.
