More than 600 runners join tenth edition

Almerimar hosted the tenth edition of the Gran Premio Murgiverde this Saturday, bringing runners of all ages to Parque Brisamar, Paseo de Levante and Paseo de Poniente for one of the final summer sporting events in El Ejido.

Organised by Club de Atletismo Murgiverde with support from the Instituto Municipal de Deportes de El Ejido and the Junta Local de Almerimar, the event combined competitive races with a family-focused atmosphere. More than 600 people took part across the adult and children’s categories.

The event concluded at Parque Brisamar, beside the finish area, where participants and spectators gathered for a social get-together and the presentation of trophies. The mayor of El Ejido, Julia Ibanez, and the councillor for sport, Maria Jose Martin, followed the event.

Winners of the 10K

Jonathan Aguilera won the overall men’s 10-kilometre race, while Eva M Quintana took the overall women’s title.

Abdelhakim Elissaoui and Alberto Segovia completed the men’s podium. Jessica Martin and Encarni Vaquero joined Quintana among the leading women.

The programme also included a five-kilometre race and several junior categories, giving runners a choice of distances and age groups. The tenth edition’s main change was a revised route, allowing participants to run beside the sea along Paseo de Poniente.

Children opened the programme

The youngest runners began the evening’s schedule at 19:00. Just over 130 children took part in the chupetines, prebenjamines, benjamines, alevines, infantiles and cadetes categories.

The 10-kilometre race started at 20:00, followed ten minutes later by the five-kilometre event. Together, these two distances had almost 470 registered participants.

All children received a commemorative medal and a runner’s bag after crossing the finish line. In the infantil and cadete categories, awards were also presented to the three highest-placed boys and the three highest-placed girls.

Two distances, one circuit

The 10-kilometre competitors completed one lap of the course. Those running five kilometres completed half a lap, turning at Punto Cero de Proteccion Civil, next to the Victor Fernandez Center.

The refreshment point for the shorter distance was also maintained at this location. The route change gave the event a clear coastal section while keeping the two race formats within the same circuit.

Part of El Ejido circuit

The Gran Premio Murgiverde forms part of the XI Circuito de Carreras de El Ejido. Its organisers again placed particular emphasis on introducing children and young people to athletics through races adapted to different ages.

The runner’s bag for adult and school participants included a technical shirt, along with gifts provided by the organisers. Participants in the five- and 10-kilometre races also received a box of seasonal vegetables, continuing the event’s connection with El Ejido’s horticultural sector and local productive identity.

With its mixture of children’s races, short-distance running and the main 10-kilometre event, the Almerimar meeting brought the summer athletics calendar to the coast while maintaining its community character.
